Hey Axiom--
The first place I would look is inside the box. It's possible a memory
card has come loose or built up some oxydation while sitting idle,
cast aside and forelorn :-)
The cover comes off the S1100 quite easily; after grounding yourself,
you could unscrew the plate that holds the memory cards in place,
take'em out one by one, wonder why Akai used a proprietary format, and
brush of any stuff that has accumulated on the contacts. Reassemble
and try it out.
By the way, you can boot your Akai Sxxx from ZIP, JAZ, HD, etc. I
believe the last OS was version 4.3. (I was booting my 1100/1100EX
from a JAZ drive, so *somewhere* in the basement is both a JAZ and ZIP
Akai-formatted cartridge with the OS on it... Ugh :-(
You can also get the Akai S1100 EPROM that contains the OS from a
fellow in Australia (http://www.firstpr.com.au/rwi/smem/), so there
are a few alternatives to the floppy.
Good luck,
