Linking two Akai S1000 samplers together.....

2007-07-27 by Gary M. Thomas

Just wondering if there would be any advantage to "daisy-chaining" two
Akai S1000 samplers together (and how exactly to hook them up, too).

Currently, I own an Akai S1000HD sampler, and I've just purchased an
Akai S1000PB (on EBay). Would ya'll please give me a little info
about the very best way to hook the two Akais together, and what (if
any) advantage that would give me.

Thanks in advance for the assistance,

Gary

OK - lets looks at this.

I'm a systems designer engineer, so I'm going to look at it like that.

What do you hope to acheive?

Play more sounds?: -- Just link them both to your MIDI controller of
choice.

More polyphony of the same sounds?: -- Load the same sample set into
noth and use a MIDI controller to do the routing, (more difficult,
but has been done).

Bigger sample depth, or longer samples?: -- Not possible, they are
two seperate sampling entities.

That leaves coupling them via SCSI to allow control from one PC:

Both MESA and Millenium only seem to support 2000/3000 series
machines, though there is some wild Linux software aout there for
1000/1100 editing. It would be good, to do, because the loading could
all be done from the same source, but Even though I write quite a bit
of real-time control code, I don't fancy that job. The options would
be to use the samplers at 2 diffeent SCSI ID's on the same bus,
(which might have awesome reset problems), or to use two SCSI cards
in one machine, one for each sampler. If you can find the right
software, it may be possible to run two instances under windows or
Linux and accomplish something this way.

If that doesn't work, then two old small PC's, (like the little Dell
Optiplexes), could be rack mounted with the samplers, and joined via
a network to allow data sharing from your main working machine. I
have a system a bit like this on mine, simply because my failing
eyesight makes it hard to work with the tiny screen on my 3000's.

To me though, the original statement is a bit like saying "I've got
two engines, can I get them both in my car?". Perhaps the best answer
is to use one to develop sounds, and then play them off both. Or
simply keep one as a backup spare, essential if you plan on using the
sampler in a live situation.

A few thoughts anyway.

Mike
