Ah, I get you. The mysterious connector is justthe same 16 pin IDC connector as used at either end of the cable. The ribbon passes straight through them, so they can be squished on anywhere along the cable. There's a question ;-) The heatsink used will need to dissipate enough heat to stop it over-heating. How much heat is produced by the regulator will depend on the power supply voltage.
