That's exactly what I did before I got my case; just for testing 
purposes. Worked fine. I found there was enough of a friction fit on 
the though plated holes to make good connections and get the step 
leds working.

Top Tip:

It's also a good way to check that you have the leds in the right way 
round before soldering ;->)
