When you have been editing a track and come to save, it automatically
saves to the same pattern. To save to a different pattern, hit a step
number and you'll see the pattern number change. 

Alternately, edit the pattern from within the playlist. So setup the
playlist to play whatever pattern numbers you like then use Edit and
the step number to enter edit for that pattern. 

I agree it's kinda obscure but you soon get into it.

Playlists confused me for ages - but try my suggestions above and see
if this helps. Wish I could sit next to you and go through it. Would
sort it in 5 minutes!
