It is possible. Cheer up man, it's not all doom and gloom you know!
When you are about to save the pattern, do you see the number? Select
another pattern number with the step keys (the number will change)
before saving - and hey presto your first remains intact and your
edited one is saved as the pattern number you specify.

Did my previous explanation help with the channel confusion BTW?

You have seen the copy/paste options? They aren't all-powerful but not
bad. There is no "pattern copy" as such.

I have also used almost all the analogue sequencers and a fair
proportion of the digital ones (step sequencers I mean here, of
course). Other than the Notron, I can't think of *any* currently
available device that comes so close to deserving the title "ultimate"
as the P3. That isn't to say I wouldn't like more controls, more
lights, more lights, more lights, but once you learn it, it is pretty
amazing. And I'm sorry I don't quite understand your last paragraph
here. If you can describe what it is you want to achieve, I'll try to
help. Once you learn your way round the UI it is both fast and
powerful. But I agree it is not intuitive from day one - it took me a
long time to understand and appreciate playlists, for example.

Be patient and mellow, keep asking.
