I think that's presently the best way to achieve it. What's needed are some aux events for 'hold playlist trk n', maybe 'unhold playlist trk n' and 'adv playlist trk n'. You could set the pattern on the playlist you want to control to 'hold' itself, and use an event on the last step of your indeterminate pattern to advance the playlist on the other (held) track as required.
