Arpeggio capture does this.
You must be in pattern edit mode to use it.
Hold FUNC and press REC - you should see <<ARP>> in the top right of the
display.
Make sure the 'rong' option is 'off'. Press the 'clr' softkey to reset to
step 1.
Then just enter notes you want from a midi keyboard.
Each note and velocity will write into a step, and it'll move onto the next
one.
Last step is increased automatically to the length of the pattern you enter.
The P:n indicator shows you which will be the next step to be written.
You can do this with the sequencer running or stopped.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
