There are some differences of opinion about the octave numbering for midi
notes.
It was never defined by in the midi standard.

I applied the logic of having octave 0 the bottom of the midi note range,
rather than aligning the numbers with what you might expect on a piano
keyboard. Aside from anything else, there are only three character spaces to
display the note names, so something like C#-2 couldn't have fitted.
