Thanks Colin, that's very helpful. One other question, once I have 
these patterns setup, how do I enter Pattern Edit to edit them? 

The manual states from Play Mode, PLAY/EDIT, step key of track 
of currently playing patter.

OR

From Playlist Edit, PLAY/EDIT, step key for pattern.

I've just been doing PLAY/EDIT, track step key up until now for my 
simple 1 pattern/1 track stuff so far.
