OH...MY...GAWD...

OH...MY...GAWD...

2005-07-17 by Jim Combs

Finally took it upon myself to update the OS and get into Auxes this
weekend. Picked up on Paul¹s mixer tip as well.

I just scratched the surface with Paul¹s intro to auxes but oh my friggin¹
gawd, what a monster! 2 new songs in a couple of hours, one a really nice
drums¹n¹bass groove and one that sounds like Weather Report in the Heavy
Weather phase.

This Nova is pretty rockin¹ too. I¹m letting the P3 drive 4 parts of a
performance and have set up a pad and a solo voice on the other 2 parts. I
kick a pad progression into my Jamman and let it loop and then solo over the
top of it all.

I¹m in heaven!

I¹ve got another newbie question. At this point, I¹m setting up one part
with one pattern into each track, each track on a separate MIDI out (1-4).
I¹m set up on 12X4. I¹m still not completely clear how one adds pattern 2-4
onto each track. What I¹m looking to do is copy the existing pattern and
then edit to create a 32 or 48 or 64 step pattern for each track.

Thanks!

To copy pattern 1 to the other patterns, first go into Pattern Edit using
PLAY/EDIT plus the track number.
Then press PLAY/EDIT as if to return to Play Mode, but before you SAVE the
pattern, press step key 2, 3 or 4 for the pattern number to copy it to. The
display will indicate Save To:, and when you then press SAVE (F1), the
pattern will be stored in the selected pattern number.

To get the newly copied patterns playing on a track, hold FUNC and press the
track key to enter Playlist Edit.

To create a playlist 2, 3 or 4 patterns in length, hold the LENG softkey
(F3), then press the PLAYLIST STEP key for the last step of your playlist.
For a 4 step playlist (i.e. so you can have 4 patterns play in sequence)
press PLAYLIST STEP 4 (step key 12).
Now you should have 4 green LEDs lit to show a 4 step playlist, with 1 LED
flashing.

As the playlist advances, the current playlist step LED flashes, and the
step number is shown after C: in the top left of the display.
You can select the pattern number to play on each step using the PATTERN
keys (step keys 1 to 8).
The selected pattern on each step is indicated by a red LED.

To select a pattern for a playlist step other than the currently playing
step, you need to enter 'edit' mode.
Hold the STEP softkey (F1) then press the playlist step key for the step to
select - you'll see the display text change from C: and the current step
number to E: and the step number you chose to select the pattern on.

To exit Playlist Edit, press FUNC again, then F1 to SAVE the changed
playlist.

Playlists are powerful, but the edit mode can be a bit daunting at first.
Sometime soon, I'm going to add a 'simple' mode to playlist edit, to allow
you to set up playlists of contiguous patterns more quickly.

Cheers,
Colin f

Or/Also if you did it as a "length" setting from realtime track record -
thus further improving the MIDI looper functionality - you'd have my
eternal gratitude (well, until the next request). In this imaginary
scenario, the length would be a number from 1 to the maximum number of
patterns and would automatically set all transposes and repeats to zero
and lay out the patterns in sequence for you. Playlist edit could remain
untouched.

The reason I ask is I've now dedicated my second P3 to my Handsonic -
mostly because its built-in sequencer is utter shite - and being able to
bang in patterns on a selection of tracks in this way would make its
already cool live drum overdubs even slicker. For many of us who don't
need all the transpose and repeat features of playlist edit; who just
want to string patterns together, this would be a very, very welcome
addition.

OK, I'll shut up with my grovelling (and poaching of Phil's idea... :)

Paul

P.S. Pretty please. Would it help if I ordered a third P3?

Thanks Colin, that's very helpful. One other question, once I have
these patterns setup, how do I enter Pattern Edit to edit them?

The manual states from Play Mode, PLAY/EDIT, step key of track
of currently playing patter.

OR

From Playlist Edit, PLAY/EDIT, step key for pattern.

I've just been doing PLAY/EDIT, track step key up until now for my
simple 1 pattern/1 track stuff so far.

Thanks!

That should be "From Playlist Edit, simultaneously push PLAY/EDIT AND
the relevant step key for pattern." So, for example, to edit pattern 3
from within playlist edit, hold Play/Edit and key 3. You'll have the
pattern number confirmed when you leave pattern edit as an extra
reminder.

The Sysex ID Patch was only required for the v3.0-T89 bootloader.

Just apply the p3-bootloader-v3.1-T89.syx, followed by the p3fw-3.1.005.syx
image.
