Yes, set one of the auxilliary events to "Set MIDI Channel" and this
will then override the track's MIDI channel for every step for which
that aux event is enabled. So you can then just turn the upper knobs for
the aux concerned and the lower row still controls notes as usual.
I think there may be an example in the back of the user guide for
something like this; if not and it still seems mysterious, drop me a
line and I'll include one.
And of course you can set the channel via other events, grab the value
from another track, randomly or conditionally mute it etc.
