There is a user config option called 'start on cont' that enables this.

Early units were hard-wired for either MIDI clock or DIN sync, but not both.

Sounds like your unit is wired for MIDI clock.
To pin down whether the problem is the P3 or the x0xbox, you'd need to run
the MIDI connection through something like MIDI-Ox on a PC.
That will let you see what data is actually coming out of the port.
There should only be MIDI start, stop or clock bytes. Anything spurious may
indicate a problem PIC.
