There's a byte in the bootloader that defines the clock frequency, and the code adjusts as needed. At boot, the later code will show either 18 or 24 in the top right of the display. That number must match the crystal frequency. Note that the CPU is not an AVR - it is made by Atmel, but the CPU is an enhanced 8051.
