Is it the backlight that's getting dimmer, or the contrast of the characters on the display ? If it's the backlight, have you got the right resistor value in R19 ? It should be 47ohms for the white on blue LCD displays. A lower value would let more current through the backlight, which could cause the LEDs to age prematurely.
