More news on P3 Stooge panel

2004-02-24 by Robert van der Kamp

Hi all,

LATEST NEWS
------------------
I learned from Stooge Larry yesterday that a 10 unit wide
Stooge panel (that will fit in a 19" rack when using the
MOTM rack rails) is possible, even with the single square
hole for the LCD. So that is good news.

I'm not going as fast as I would like to, so we may miss the
current Stooge panel run. Be prepared. ;)

BENNIE'S PANEL
---------------------
I decided to base the Stooge panel layout on a beautiful
design from list member Bennie Vreemann. Note that I will
do some redesign though, as described below.

Bennie, Boele and I met a couple of weeks ago, and I was
able to see his panel in real life. It looks great. Have a
look at this (blurry) picture of this P3 panel:

http://home.planet.nl/~robnet/p3/P3-Bennie.jpg

That darker area below the LCD is just a metal fix he had to
make for the buttons below there, so try to ignore that.
The Schaeffer panel design (below) is corrected, says
Bennie.

His original panel is using a Schaeffer panel. Note the much
larger LCD and the sexy buttons. Data on Bennie's original
Schaeffer panel and the used partlist is here:

CHANGES
------------
Now have a look at the picture again to see what I will
change for the Stooge panel:

1. The 3 MIDI jacks will be removed from the front panel.
You will have mount them somewhere on the back of the
panel.

2. The row of F1-PAGE buttons, as well as the DATA and TEMPO
knobs will be moved right by one grid position. Meaning
that the F1 button will be positioned where the F2 button
is now shown on the pic, and the TEMPO knob will end up
below the right most MIDI jack (but the MIDI jacks will be
removed).

3. The LCD will be moved left a bit, to center align it with
the F2 button.

4. All knobs will get tick marks, MOTM style.

5. Some panel graphics will be added. The row of numbers
(1-16) will also be printed above the bottom green buttons.
And I'd also like to add a horizontal line there,
indicating track 1-8 and bank 1-8.

Any suggestions???

That does look good. I guess there must be a lot of wiring behind
there though ?
Maybe if there's enough people wanting to use this panel layout, an
alternative PCB layout could be done to suit.
I haven't got time to do this myself, but if someone else wanted to,
I can provide the schematic file or net lists for the pot & switch
boards.

Looks great!

The function buttons (F1.... etc) are a bit small. They are used so
often it would be nice for them to be a bit bigger. The space used
to have the labels above the buttons is very costly.

I like the idea of adding the additional labeling of the bank 1-8. I
will probably create some custom labels for mine.

Hey Sayer!

You could probably use other buttons there, if the drilled
hole in the Stooge panel has the right size. You could also
get the Stooge panel and do the drilling yourself.

Tell me, what custom labels would you add?
