mounting hardware for hammond cases

2004-03-09 by blip

hi there...

a question for those of you who've built P3s in the hammond slantface
cases... what kind of mounting hardware did you use? i'm guessing the
stuff that colin used for the rackmount P3 would take up too much space in
the hammond case.

thanks,
fred.

You can see my P3 construction page here

http://www.techman.synth.net/techman_website2_000033.htm

There's a link to pdf BOMs for the main board, and the rest of the circuitry. I've listed
the 10mm M3 spacers, M3 20mm Pozi countersunk screws, and M3 Nyloc nuts.

Yeah, I know, it's all metric ;->)

All the best

Andy

And a fine page it is too.

Only thing I'd add is that if you use the Maplin type switches, the
boards want 15mm of spacer.
I also use 5mm spacers on the PLED display modules.

that's good to know... i'm guessing the switches listed on the US BOM will
probably require only 10mm. they look (or look liek they'll look) very
similar to the switches andy used for his.

btw, my PLED from crystalfontz.com arrived yesterday... it looks lovely.
everything else is coming thursday.... *twitchtwitch*

if anything looks like it won't work, i'll update the BOM again with
something new... i'm nervous about the knob/pot combination... might have
to go with rather expensive knobs.

what stuff?
There's loads of space in the Hammond style case, thats why I picked it..
I've built Two now (mine and Amandas black one) and had no problem.
As colin said the only real difference is the spacers, but thats because it
uses different switchs.

The narrow/deep Hammond case has a bit more clearance than the wider one
that Chiel used, but the wider one is bigger than the Maplin cases I
used to use, and 20mm M3 screws fit OK in them. You just need to be
careful to position the main board so that nothing sticking up from the
main board meets a pot board or switchboard connector sticking down.
Once I get some wide Hammond cases machined, I'll work out the exact
locations to put things, and do a diagram.

Cheers,
Colin f

it's the spacers and screws i was wondering about. plus, i think you're
using a different case than at least i'm planning to use... i'm using the
one that i think chiel is using. his uses the square maplin keys, i
believe. it has the display and keypad to the right of the knob/switch
rows.

Hi there Paul,

Ive got my p3 here waiting to go, but i only have a small ammount of the ribbon cable. I want to start up the device before i get the hammond case, but my fear is that ill make the cables an incorrect length for the case. If i do this, then ill end up having to buy a whole real of ribbon to remake the cable, hence i want to get it right first time.

Is there any chance you, or indeed someone else who has a hammond enclosed p3, could give me some resonably accurate measurements for making up the cables?

With this data, ill be using the p3 (fingers crossed), as, other then the cable, its done : )

Cheers, Julian

The Beast.. It lives!

Just applied power.

Greeted with firmware check... P3 version... memory layout...

Swap arround the cable, so as i can actually use the keypad (hope i didnt do damage here)

Enter the memory layout.

And then the next screen has Tempo glitching along the top, and bank FTS tune glitching along the bottom.

Turning the temp pot and you can just about see stuff going on, but thats about it.

So then, where have i gone wrong, i wonder.

Swap the tempo pot wireing arroud (hey, i dont know what its like when you wire it wrong) Then swap it back (got it right 1st time)

4:25 am (may have somthing to do with it, i guess)

Look back through the email archives, and do the memory wipe thing....

All appears fine now :))

Well, evreything does something. The buttons all change the stuff on the screen and all that.

Maybee tommorow ill soilder that I/O board, and see if it ^realy^ works.

Julian

(time to sleep i think)

If I get a chance I'll open it up this weekend and measure it.

Too late... Dont worry, i couldnt wait. If it dosnt fit the case, ill just have to buy a reel.. So be it ; )

Cheers, Julian
