quick parts question

2004-04-19 by ch.³l

hi guys,

i'm having a hard time finding the 10uF/16v capacitors, so i was
wondering if a 10uF/35v capacitor would work instead. i'd think so,
as Colin mentions on his build page that they're "16v or above", but
i'm just making sure..

cool. the other option would be a tantal capacitor...and i have no
idea what that is. thnx.

35v caps should be fine. The only possible problem would be if they were
physically bigger - you might need more space for them to fit under the
panel.

"tantal" would be "tantalum" which has very different electrical properties
than an electrolytic. Stick with the 10uf/35v and keep the space
requirements in mind.

This would be a good time for me to ask a general question that ive been
wanting to know for a while:

Can a capacitor always be substiuted for one of the same capacitance but
higher voltage? Is the only problem that the physical size of the component
increases? Or are there examples where a higher than specified voltage
capacitor will create problems?

Thankyou, Julian

In general, you're absolutely right, a capacitor of the same type and
value, but with a higher voltage rating can be substituted with no
problems. As has already been mentioned, the physical size may be the
determining property. It's something that I've done a lot, and have
never experienced any problems.

don't use tantalum caps they suck!
lots of reasons, two main ones, they breakdown with age quicker than
ordinary ones and the biggy, when they blow, they blow SHORT circuit, not
open like normal caps. That means a loud bang and a whole new machine.

hi guys; back again...

Colin, do you think the PLED display shown on the following site
would work? it's also 44780-compatible, and it's 30 euro's, where the
one farnell stock is 45...
