Yeah, the single-source of the Maplin keyswitches is a good reason to stop
using them. I don't know how much custom keycaps would run to yet - I'll see
if the case people can source them too. I might even be contracting out the
whole ready-built P3 process, which will let me focus on the design work.

I've been messing about with PaintShop Pro...
http://www.colinfraser.com/p3/p3-case-fake.jpg
This style of case would be designed to have wooden ends attached so
it could sit on a desk, or L-brackets attached so it could rack
mount.
Output sockets and power connection would be recessed from the rear
edge enough to not cause a problem in a tight rack. Not sure where
the power switch would go - it'd be hard to reach in a rack unless
it moved to the front.
Picture it with coloured key caps on the step keys, and
step/track/part labels on the panel below the switches.
Possibly Tr808 switches with the LEDs in the upper part of the
switch.
Keypad keys would have labels on the key tops.
Does this seem like the right direction ?

Cheers,

hi Colin,
i like the recessed back panel; i have some gear that has that and
it's great when rackmounting.
the place the tempo/data pots are now looks a bit weird. looking at
my other gear, most of them have the 'data'-type control to the right
of the display. seems logical for right-handed users. perhaps above
or beside the display?
i also like the idea of 808-style buttons; i was thinking about that
for mine but went for the original style eventually :)
about the place the power switch should go; the gear i have that has
an inaccessible power switch is basically always on when the main
power to the studio is up. from what i see around me a lot of people
work that way, with just 1 or 2 main power switches.

I like where it is going. Although I would rather have the funtion
keys directly below the display.

Will you need to squeeze the knobs closer together to gain the extra
room for the rack ears?

Pretty much agree with Chiel. You're getting pretty close to the
ultimate P3 incarnation methinks.
