The checksum error means the flash ROM has become corrupted somehow. This has happened in a small number of cases, mostly with CPUs that have been shipped abroad, which leads me to suspect there may be X-raying or something that may be causing a small number of failures. All CPUs are flashed in my own development unit, and tested for a few minutes, so they all work when they leave here. Worst case is you ship the CPU back to me and I re-write or replace it. I do this for the cost of return postage only. If you press "flash", do you get the "Start F/W TX Now" message ? If so, you should be able to send a new dump via sysex that will fix the corruption. If the bootloader wont respond, it may be because of corruption in the bootloader itself. This has only happened once before, but is not impossible. Julian“s problem with the bootloader taking a long time to reach the flash option is unique as far as I am aware - Julian, have you tried applying the bootloader update ? There may be a small corruption of the flash in your bootloader causing that. Poor response to sysex is most likely caused by the opto-isolator being marginal. This can be fixed by adjusting the resistor values, though I will shortly be changing the opto specified, as it seems the 6N137 is a more consistent performer for midi reception.
