using p3 with real modular...

2004-10-15 by implode7@comcast.net

I am contemplating the purchase of a Doepfer modular system...

I'm sure that someone here probably has an opinion on this...anyone with experience using the p3 in a similar setup have opinions as to which might be better in practice as a midi to cv interface - the Encore Expressionist, or the Doepfer mcv24?

Any other thoughts concerning this kind of setup would certainly be appreciated, on list, or off.

Thanks,
Gene

the expressionist is awesome for playing and for polyphony, but it only
has 8 cv out and 8 gate out. the doepfer has a total of 24 cv outs, and
apparently any of these can be used as gates. i think this would offer
more flexibility when controlling an a-100 from the p3... but that's just
me. another factor to consider is that the expressionist is on 1/4" jacks
and the mcv is on 1/8" like the rest of the a-100 modules. having the
jacks on the front is a nice boon too.

bleep.
out.

I have all three ofthe things that you mentioned (lucky me ; ) - the a100, the p3, and the mcv24.

The p3 and the a100 are obviously nice. The mcv24 is good, but...

Only 4 of its outputs are of good (12bit) resolution. The others are 8bit, so, although they all have things like software lfos and the like, without slew limiters, these can sound lumpy.

Colin himself wrote a deapthy explanation of bit depths, and midi controller resoultion on one of the other lists the other day, but the general gist of it seemed (to me) to be that the midi standard itself is sometimes not high enough to worry about the performance of the dac anyway.

But, i need to re-read colins explanation. The mcv24 excells in its number of outputs and real flexibility (i have / have had mine plummed over to a selection of different devices at the same time) but, if you can find a real reason why those 8bit dacs will be a problem to you, then maybee youll have to go for a less flexible, although higher resolution product?

Comments, if no hard conclusion.

Julian
