Anyone use a p3 with a fostex HD recorder?

Anyone use a p3 with a fostex HD recorder?

2005-02-02 by Julian

And care to tell me what settings i need to use, in order to get the fostex (in my case a d-160) to sync as a slave to the p3?

I know this is more a fostex question then a p3 question, but the fostex manual keeps saying "refer to your sequencers literature"
:/

Things like frame rate..

Basically, i dont really know what im up to. My MAM sq16 syncs fine, but im pretty confused as to all the questions the fostex is
asking of me, and, i know its lame, but i just thought someone here has probably been through all this before?

(i cant even get the MTC led to light on the front of the fostex at this point)

Cheers, Julian

Does the Fostex sync to midi clock, or does it need midi timecode ?
P3 transmits midi clock (if the 'mclk' option is on), but not midi timecode
(MTC).
MTC is a linear time message not tempo related, essentially the same as
SMPTE.

Does the SQ16 send MTC ? Seems like an odd thing for a step sequencer to do.

Theres mention of MMC in the manual, but then i find the following comment:

"External midi equipment that can be used as the master is limited to those that can output MTC"

> Does the SQ16 send MTC ? Seems like an odd thing for a step sequencer to do.

No, i ment that the SQ16 synced to the p3 fine, not that it controlled the fostex fine (which i havent tried, but going by what you
say....)

Grrr.... So an i stuffed, so far as that goes? I understand why the p3 dosnt output mtc, but why the fostex dosnt have a simple
sync as well, like every other device...

Any suggestions? Some way to generate a pseudo MTC? One that prehaps resets to the beginning of bar one every time a midi START
signal is recieved, and generates a code from there?

Well you could drive a computer sequencer/DAW [slave] from the P3
[master]. The computer will then send out MTC to the hard disk recorder.
But I guess that defeats the purpose of the HDR.

A little Atari running Cubase or the like would do the trick.

I have to use the P3 as the sync master for use with Reason. It works
very well. Because Reason cannot act as master because its pants... but
I digress.

I try real hard not to use computers in music (i know most other people like them, but..)

I have an alesis datadisk sq arround here somewhere... Im thinking that maybee i can generate a MTC from somthing else (ok, a
one-off use fo the computer maybee), record it onto the datadisk, and then sync the datadisk to the p3...

Im sure theres some reason why this wont work though.

Why on earth couldnt fostex manage to add a simple recognition of the START message?

Step sequencers loop - so aren't really ideal for syncing to absolute
time codes such as SMPTE or MTC.

MMC is something entirely different again - MIDI Machine Control. It's
a protocol (sysex) for remote control of tape devices and the like. it
sends general commands like "play" "stop" and "rewind".

Well, my VS-880 can send MIDI Clock as well as MTC IIRC. And I'm not
using it very much at the moment... 8-)

i dont completely follow you there.

have a 'click' track on the HDR... but i dont understand how thatll enable me to start and stop the hdr from a midi STARt signal?

Julian

ps. colin, im back now, if you wanna do that cpu stuff...

Er, I didn't quite think that through, did I ?
It's control you want, not just sync.

Waiting on a ZIF socket - will be with you in a few days.
