P3 Update

P3 Update

2005-02-23 by colinfraser_com

Folks,

I've had bad news and good news this week...
Bad news was the CPU used in P3, the T89C51RD2 has been discontinued
and my suppliers have no further stock. That was a shock, I can tell
you...
The good news is that it has been superseded by a new part, the
AT89C51ED2.
However there are changes to the way the in-system programming works
on this CPU that means I'm going to have to write a new bootloader
for the new processor. So shipping of PCB/CPU only kits will be
delayed until I can get that done and thoroughly tested.
This is likely to mean a new bootloader will also be required for
existing units so I don't have to generate different firmware
images for old and new processor versions.
Hopefully this work will be complete before the cases arrive, so
wont delay full kits or ready built units.
I'll keep you posted.

Cheers,
Colin f

Talk about last minute surprises !!!!! :-(

I guess its pin compatible with the old part then ?
Apart from the hassle its giving you right now, are there any
potential benefits ... new and more powerful instructions in the
instruction set perhaps ?

I'll take it that the priority on the info I asked for has gone down
a couple of notches then. ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-)
