P3 News

2005-03-10 by Colin f

Folks,

Thought I'd give you a quick update on what's going on here...
P3 PCBs, keyswitches and cases are all now in, though I'm still waiting on
the wooden end-cheeks for the cases from another supplier.
I'll be working through the list of people on the waiting lists for
partial/full kits and ready-built units in the coming weeks, to get orders
firmed up.

With a new son, and a full-time day job, my ability to develop the potential
of P3 has been curtailed of late. With the daily commute, and dull corporate
job getting me down, I decided the time was right to try a change of tack.
Three weeks tomorrow, I finish up the day job, and will become
self-employed.
Plan A is to develop the commercial potential of P3 into a viable business.
Once I'm able to work on it full-time, I'll be able to fill orders a lot
more quickly, and keep production running so there aren't long periods of
unavailability. I'll also be looking to develop other products, such as a
dedicated percussion sequencer, an 'ultimate' step sequencer (for the
obscenely rich), and some other cool things that you'll definitely want at
least three of. Possibly even some things that actually make a noise...
Plan B is continue in my current career path, as a contractor. Don't make me
do that !

Cheers,
Colin f

Pencil me in for R3 and "ultimate" step sequencer please - now the
bad news, just one of each :-)

Good luck in your new business!

It's a bold step, and I wish you every success with this venture
Colin. Are you going to continue to make pcbs and part kits available
for new and existing products, or is it your intention to just
produce complete units once things get off the ground.

All the best

Andy (hoping it's the former and trying to justify a 2nd P3 'cos they
look so cool now!)

dammit colin! until this message, my gear lust was totally sated! i have
my P3 and all the sound making and recording stuff I need and am happily
making music with it all rather than dreaming about the next great thing
around the corner. :)

ah well, at least you've given me enough warning so i can start saving. :)

seriously though, that is *excellent*, for you and for us. the P3 really
is a brilliant thing, and the world could only benefit from having more of
them.

hmm... that makes my plan A to get a job that pays better so i can do my
part to ensure you don't have to do plan b. :)

bleep.
out.

I'll wait and see how things pan out.
I think the kit market is probably a lot more limited than the ready-built
market, but I like building things myself, so I can relate to people who
would enjoy putting a kit together. If it isn't too time consuming, I'll
keep the kits going.
I will need to differentiate between home and factory assembled units as far
as the second-hand buyer is concerned (not that I expect many people will
sell them ;) - I have no quality control over the way a kit is put together.
So I'll be applying different serial numbers to kit and ready-built CPUs
from now on. Ready-built units will have a serial number starting with an
odd digit, kits will be even.
The first ready-built production unit is serial number #1001. The numbers
will be written in the CPU flash, and will be displayed on power on. I have
plans to allow older CPUs to have a serial number entered, via secure codes
so there'll not be a dozen P3 number 1's turning up on eBay a few years down
the line ;-)

Cheers,
Colin f

Good luck with your brave move Colin.

Im VERY interested in this. Would this be re-jigged & simplified (note
on/off) p3? Sounds like what i need for my airbass99.
Are we talking far in the future? :)

New Demo Files

2005-03-11 by Paul Nagle

Gang,

I just uploaded a sysex file with accompanying documentation that may
be of interest, especially to new P3 owners.

It's my first stab at a demo document that illustrates some of the
power of auxilliary events, force to scale, playlists, the
arpeggiator, knob functions etc. Please take a look and let me know if
it's too complicated, too simple, hard to follow etc.

I was pondering that introducing the P3 to someone is always going to
be quite daunting so presenting them with some prepared banks at the
outset could be a catalyst to deeper exploration. I hope so anyway.

The docs and sysex are in the files section of the Yahoo group.

All comments welcome.

Paul

Hello all,

I just signed onto this list, and I hope to get one of the first
s/n #100x P3s sent to the states when they arrive in a few weeks. I,
too, have an airbass99 awaiting the dedicated rhythm sequencer....
