Problem using my P3 with my Virus Indigo...

Problem using my P3 with my Virus Indigo...

2005-08-10 by djparislee

Before I start, I know the problem is clearly coming from the Virus and not the P3...

I'm just trying to figure out what type of problem it might be...

I turn the Virus on, select a patch...but as soon as I press run on the P3 the virus goes
silent.

I have to turn it off and back on to regain sound...

seems like my Virus is in trouble!

After further review...the problem might have to do with switching banks on the P3

I just tried it with Bank 1...everything was fine...

I switched it to bank 3...virus goes silent again

Maybe something in the demo patterns ?
Is it doing this with a blank pattern and all tracks muted ?

So I disabled the 'midi chans per bank' function and it is now fine switching from bank to
bank...

but there has to be something else at play here...

I've had it go silent while within the same bank...and when it does...the sound won't come
back (even when I play the actual Virus Keyboard)...

what kind of message could the P3 send the Virus that would disable the sound and make
the keyboard not play?

it's working fine at the moment at least...

maybe here is another clue...it seems to happen when I'm using monophonic patches

Out of curiosity, is your P3 set to Remote Transmit? It's in User
Config. Just a wild idea. You could send the data to MIDI Ox and see
what is being sent - maybe something mapped to a Virus CC (the osc
volume is CC36 IIRC).

Cool P3 Trick (multiple P3s only :)

2005-08-10 by Paul Nagle

Well, it's been a while; and this one is only going to be use to those
lucky enough to have access to more than one P3....

Setup each part so that it uses different GBar lengths. My master P3 has
all its global bars set at 16 and repeats at 1. When I select multiple
parts it therefore plays through each part in turn as you'd expect. Now
using the newly enhanced Thru function I can send both P3s' output to
one multitimbral module (a Virus as it happens) choosing which P3 sends
data to which channel using prepared Parts with relevant tracks
active/muted.

The cunning bit happens when you set the second P3 to have different
GBar lengths. And not just 32, 64 etc. but 62, 66 and 256 and so on.
With all patterns synced to the Gbar you'd normally get some cool
variations this way anyway but it's even better when each P3 now tracks
its Parts at a different rate. You get combinations of parts playing
that you didn't expect or plan: you can end up with tracks on both P3s
playing the same MIDI channel at once, for example (so best make the
patch polyphonic) but one may hang around longer than the other.

I even tried GBar lengths like 17 just for laughs and it still ended up
sounding cool.

Just thought I'd share that... :)

Hi Paul,

Seeing how you are master of cool tricks - and I've still got to read the
manual, perhaps you can help.

I'm after some sequences of more than 16 notes, can this be done ?

If not can I use 2 or 3 tracks and alternate between tracks every time I go
around the loop ?

i.e. Track 1 first part, Track 2 second part (both same channel) and the
just sequence 121212121 turning the tracks on and off ?

Or is there an easier way ?

Cheers

If you're running some of the pre-loaded patterns, there could be various
midi CCs getting sent.
Let me know which bank and track does it, and I'll tell you what's in there.

I have a virus keyboard that I think I remember having the same sorts of
problems with, P3 wise... try disabling the reception of bank and program
changes on the virus...

bleep.
out.
