Giving props to Paul

Giving props to Paul

2005-09-19 by jimcombsus

Hello all!

Just back from Different Skies and just wanted to publicly thank Paul
Nagle for his patient sharing of knowledge around the P3 over the past
week.

Paul gave an hour seminar to the other 3 P3 owners at the event plus a
couple other interested parties. You can see at photo of us at the top
of this page:

http://www.differentskies.com/dailyphotologwec.html

The three of us were mostly novices. So Paul quickly walked through
the basics and then plunged into an explanation of auxes and some of
the most common aux events and uses. He also interspersed the
demonstration with examples of how he "plays" the P3. And as I
realized, this was not necessarily how the P3 is programed, but more
of what musical result Paul tries to achieve and how he does that.
This was a huge aha for me.

Prior to this, a lot of the tips have been going over my head because
I did not know what the musical outcome was intended to be. Seeing
Paul first program something and then play the program gave me a
needed bridge to put 2 & 2 together.

The other aha moment is when I realized that I had been thinking of
aux events as being pattern specific where it is really step specific.
A subtle shift in thinking but a major step forward for me personally.

Later in the week, Paul helped extend a sequence I had created for one
tune and I got to see how he takes a musical concept and uses the P3
to make it happen. On Saturday, Paul was asked at the last minute to
collaborate on a dance number for the World Dance peace event prior to
our concert, and he borrowed my rig to create something literally 5
minutes before he pressed RUN. Again, I got to watch and listen as he
put the piece together and then watch him play the P3 to bring it to life.

Finally, Paul and I end up flying to Atlanta on the same flight and we
talked about P3 programming, musical approaches, and music business
approaches.

If I had done nothing else at Different Skies except this P3 training,
it would have been a fabulous trip. Paul was incredibly patient with
all the newbie questions and gracious with his expertise and insight.
I'm really excited to dive deeper and will now have a better basis of
understanding to go there.

Thanks again Paul! And thanks again Colin for a great product!

Any time - it was a total pleasure from start to finish and I really
enjoyed our chat coming back to Atlanta. Must do it again!
