[analogue-sequencer] PC MIDI questions

2006-01-04 by Andrew Scheidler

My absolute favorite software ever is Techo Toys' SEQ-303. It runs like a charm (actually 3 apps at once, while recording WAV files at the same time) on my old Toshiba PII mmx machine that is running Win95 :)

It's your basic 16 stage step sequencer, but has about every feature a step sequencer can have; gate time, clock division, extra sets of sliders you can map to MIDI CC numbers, etc. It will do forward, backward, pendulum (odd and even), random, brownian, etc. It shares a lot of the genius that Colin put in the P3.

The author (Jim Johnson) ended his company years ago, but I *think* he released a final version as shareware.

I'll see if I still have a copy of that release...

While my main studio tools are Macintosh-based, a friend has given me
an old Pentium laptop and I've got it up and running on a wireless
lan card. I've downloaded P3Tools and am preparing to start using
this machine as a general MIDI tool for my studio. The machine is a
Pentium MMX machine from 1998 it looks like (Toshiba Tecra 550CDT)
running at 300-someodd MHz, 128M RAM, pretty slow and low power,
running Windows 2000. So a couple of questions:

1) What is a good *cheap* MIDI interface (1 in/1 out) for this beast?
I've got both a USB connector and a Cardbus slot available.

2) Besides P3Tools, can anyone suggest some free/shareware programs
that would be worthwhile? I know about a patch generator for my JD-
800 that I want to get. A good sysex program/librarian perhaps?

Thanks!

hi there,

that was a marvelous piece of software indeed. I had great fun with
that until my various trial versions ran out. IIRC Techno Toys had
some other bits of software which were pretty good too. If they're
available as shareware i'll keep my eyes peeled.
as for other good free/shareware stuff, midiOX is excellent in all
sorts of midi-manipulation. And I have an Edirol UM-1SX USB 1-in/1-out
midi-interface which works fine and cost me something like 30 euro's.

Seq-303 convinced me of two things:
First, that the analogue sequencer paradigm can be a really inspiring way to
approach pattern based music creation.
Second, that the keyboard, mouse and monitor interface, combined with the
level of interference a desktop computer OS imposes on my thought processes,
makes a very strong case for a dedicated hardware instrument.
I could never bear to use any software sequencer for long, but that one was
a major influence on the shape of P3.

Seq-303 was one of the few pieces of software I actually registered and
used. If it hadn't been pirated so much and thus abandoned, there were a
whole host of cool features coming that I'd asked for. As you can
probably imagine. At least the P3 can't be pirated!
