where to buy cherry switches and keycaps

where to buy cherry switches and keycaps

2006-08-29 by bambam4236

Well i shocked myself when i sat down to start on my P3 kit and
finished damn near all of it in one weekend!
Now i'm pissed because i thought it would take much longer so dont
have all the switches etc to get it running....ahhh so close but not
quite ;(

Anyway I'm kicking myself because i left it too late to buy one of
colins printed sets so i started doing some hunting online and am
having trouble ordering the 22 cherry switches and caps i need here
in australia...the minimum order i can find is for 100!

So i was wondering if anyone by any chance has a set of the printed
caps and swicthes for sale...unlikely i know or alternatively if
someone can let me know a place with good pricing that will ship
overseas and accept an order of 22 switches.

Also if anyone has done printed caps apart from colin i'd be
interested.

thanks heaps
Brett

Have you taken a look at digikey.com? They stock Cherry keys.

For keycaps, have a look at xkeys.com under the 'accessories' sidebar
item. Their caps have clear lenses that snap on top, so you'd be able
to print out some custom labels.

It looks like I'm finally getting a set of P3 boards. (Yay!) Now I'm
going through the archives, looking for information just like this.
Did you ever find a solution?

Also, I recently bought the "stooge" panel business, and I'm thinking
of making an MOTM-style front panel for my P3, with the same textured
black paint. Anybody else interested in something like that?

Depending on price, I'd be interested. I've been sitting on a kit for
quite a while that I'd like to assemble... I just don't have the time for
doing the metal work at the moment (and I was too poor when Colin was
selling his chassis)

One of my P3s does not have rack mounts. Would your design include
rack mounts or use the existing P3 rack mount solution?

I was thinking at first that I would just make a full width panel with
rack mount holes in it. Then I started thinking that I might want to
be able to put wooden panels on the end and use it standalone...

Either way, the silkscreen(s) will be the same, so I should be able to
make either style easily...

Hi Doug

I ended up getting the switches from mouser as they were a better
price than anything i could find locally in australia. The price was
pretty low so i even invested in spares. i can try to dig up the
part number from mouser if you need it. Colin did pass on the
following which is the actual cherry part #
"The ones I used are MX1A-11NN, which the datasheet says
are "Standard force, linear, face plate mount".

RE the keycaps I hunted and hunted and found a local supplier who
had nice low profile ones with clear windows for adding labels.
There are pics of my unit in the photos section....mine have brettm
as a name. If you like them and are stuck for a supplier local to
you i can see if i can source you a set from the same supplier and
ship them to you, they are very light so i doubt the cost would be
much for shipping.

cheers
Brett
