Unable to enter Firmware Upgrade Mode

Unable to enter Firmware Upgrade Mode

2006-12-24 by jaynothing

Hi,

I just spent an hour trying to solve the following problem with no success. So if Colin or
anyone else could come up with a solution that'd be greatly appreciated.

When I try to enter the Firmware Upgrade Mode the display never shows what's supposed
to come up as illustrated in the manual.

Most of the time I get one line showing:

"v3.3 CHK = "

and nothing else. The P3 would just freeze right there.

But the results also vary randomly. Sometimes one line showing "BAD DATA!" would come
up straight away.

Some other times the display would alternate between "Firmware check.." and "v3.3 CHK =
" for as long as FUNC and PAGE are held, and would boot normally as soon as those keys
are released, only that there would be some random settings after boot-up (FTS, User
Conf, Part Chain, etc).

I've tried unplugging the cables from the MIDI IN and/or OUT, and I've tried 3 different
MIDI interfaces (MOTU micro express, MOTU 828 MK 2, M-Audio Trigger Finger), but the
only thing that's consistant is that I can't enter the Firmware Upgrade Mode.

Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas.

Jay C.

This sounds like you must have some corrupt data in the bootloader section
of the flash ROM.
Since it is allowing you to boot normally, the error must be in the firmware
update mode code, rather than the usual boot code.
Drop me a mail privately with your postal address and serial number, and I
can swap out your CPU.

How are you attempting the update ? Just with a MIDI file playback/sysex
dump, or using the P3 Tools app ?

It could either be a problem with the MIDI connection or block timing, or it
could be a problem with the CPU - I've seen one other CPU develop a bad
block in flash. Using P3 Tools woudl show if it is the same block that is
failing to write each time, which would suggest a CPU problem rather than a
MIDI issue.

If you can find a sysex utility for the Mac that will let you send the syx
file with a second or so delay between each block you should have plenty
time to see if there is a flash write error or checksum error at a
particular block.
Failing that, you can send the CPU back to me and I'll test it here.

There are some default sys ex in the tools... I don´t want to delete my
patterns just the memory OS

Is any file to do that?

Thanks
