I can't recommend building P3 as your first project - maybe you should buy
some other kits for practice.

I would always use a socket for the CPU - then the worst you can do is melt
the socket.
In case of a CPU that has failed because of constructor error, I can supply
another single CPU at a reasonable price. You cannot just buy a replacement
CPU from a store, as it needs to have the firmware written to it, and this
is not available in the required form.
But as far as I know, no-one has toasted a P3 processor yet.
