Re: [analogue-sequencer] Re: P3 for sale

I wouldn't put it that way. The p3 is the ultimate (to this point) in a hardware sequencer, or a particular way of thinking... of playing more conceptually and explicitly with the patterns of event flow (god that sounds pretentious). The Octopus (as well as pretty much every other sequencer than the p3) doesn't take this algorithmic planning to nearly the same level. You can't say that you want, with x% probability, to modulate this event, some of the time, on this track, but maybe on that track .... practically anything that you can come up with conceptually along those lines can be designed on the p3. The octopus, to me, is more of this huge visual playground where you pretty much never run out of space (though I suppose some do) - you can design patterns visually and intuitively, and there are some very neat tools to play around with, like the programmable user directions... the work flow is just very different, and it's hard to describe what I really like about it. In that neither is generating sound, I'd hesitate to speak about it in terms of immediacy of sound generation, or granularity of sound generation. I think that it really comes down to work flow, because after all, any decent computer sequencer can do what any of these hardware sequencers do. The proof is that you can record them into a software sequencer....but it (to me) is about the work flow, inspiration, and improvisation of these ideas. In that they are just so damn different. But that's one reason I love these tools. I just think so differently when I use them. I also am quite fond of the Schrittmacher, and I have a sam-16 on order. One day I'll grow up.
