Sequentix P3 #008 Is Complete

Sequentix P3 #008 Is Complete

2008-04-05 by Steve

Hey everyone... I just finished up building an original
(preproduction?) case P3 for one of the members of this group,
complete with a MemX and v4.00 beta 26 OS, and I thought you all might
like to see pictures of it. I'm happy with how it came out, even with
the difficulties encountered with the older style case.

If you'd like to see them, the photos are here:
http://nuxx.net/gallery/v/stuffivemade/sequentix_p3_for_mark_pulver/

I've also started moving content where I discuss / detail various
projects I've been working on (generally electronics) from LiveJournal
to a persoal blog. Right now the body of content is a detailed
discussion of the assembly of P3 #008, if you're interested in that as
well:

Thanks. :) I might be doing a production case one within the next
couple of weeks as well... Hopefully I'll have photos of that online
too... For now I'm going to hop on my bike go enjoy the finally-nice
weather here in SE Michigan.

WOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

That's me!

Folks, if any of you are sitting on a kit (mine had been sitting for YEARS)
I can't say enough good things about working with Steve.

Steve introduced himself to IvanCU and I after Ivan had put out a call
looking for someone who wanted to assemble a P3 kit. I took Steve up on his
offer first, and in the course of about 4 weeks (which included me sitting
on it for 2 weeks, then a week in transit) Steve had finished up something
I'd been waiting for since 2003.

Steve was INCREDIBLE during the process. You can see his documentation
through pics, and he also kept up a running dialog on his blog. he was in
constant communication with me all through the process, asking questions
about build options, parts substitutions, etc.

Cost? VERY reasonable. It's not my place to talk about his pricing, as each
experience will have it's own challenges, but I'm very happy.

I have other projects laying around that I think Steve's about to get
himself into. :)

_THANK YOU_ Steve. It's been a pleasure!

Mark

That case is the 'Maddox layout'.

The 'original' P3 case was a black desktop case sold by Maplin.
Only four P3s were produced by myself in that case, such as this one...
http://www.sequentix.com/gallery/p3-3.JPG
Note the lack of mode keys and LEDs, and data knob - the earliest units were
all retrofitted with those later.
Only one original case survives unmodified, though non-functional.

Later pre-production units used a very similar Hammond case, like this...
http://www.sequentix.com/gallery/p3-056-2.jpg

The Maddox layout (so called because Paul Maddox came up with it) used a
different Hammond case, which is narrower but deeper - hence the relocation
of the display and keypad.
The main advantage of that case was that it came with wooden end cheeks ;-)
I built a couple of those as special orders, and a few other cases in that
style were made by Steve Thomas, when he was doing his DIY CNC work.
I don't really get on with that layout as the buttons are not where I
expect.

I built a number of pre-production P3s using Schaeffer panels in 19" rack
mount form, such as this one...
http://www.sequentix.com/build/old/images/p3-rack.jpg

A few tweaks later, I ended up with this design...
http://www.sequentix.com/gallery/p3-069.jpg
...which didn't change much before going into production.

There were also a couple of other variations, such as Gert's Big One...
http://www.sequentix.com/gallery/gbo.jpg
Check out the standard PLED display on that one for an idea of scale.

And the super-compact 'hand-baggage' P3...

Is this what they mean by a 'case history' ?

Wow. I hadn't realized there were so many implementations... Thanks
for clearing that up. I'll change my documentation to reflect that.

And here's #007

http://www.techman.synth.net/techman_website2_000033.htm

I built this in 2003 and it's still going strong, except for a
slightly dodgy PLED. It now has a memx board, but my solution to the
tight fit was to rotate the main board round by 180 deg to give more
headroom.

Cheers
