P4 v4 usage things...

P4 v4 usage things...

2008-04-15 by Mark Pulver

So now that I'm an old pro with a screaming 2 hours under my belt, I have
some questions. :)

- Is there a display mode that will let me see the stage values (note, gate
time, length) that isn't timed? Right now you're shown the values for ~2
seconds then the display clears.

- Kinda' along the same lines, I think it'd be great to have a "live step"
mode for Edit. So, you'd stop the sequence, go to EDIT, then single-step
through a sequence. As you do, the display shows various stage params like
note value, length, gate time. And since this is MIDI, then spinning the
stage data-entry knob would re-trigger so you can hear the new note.

"Stop the sequence"? Stop? Like, not have it running?
A total absence of patterns playing? I'm having
difficulty understanding the concept... stop the
sequence... stop it? No sequence running?

Nope, you lost me! You're way too weird dude! :)

HAHAHH!!!

Okay, so... the sequence is running, but the display is locked to show the
stage info, and you can step through the stages editing as you go.

That better? :)

Hehe, still sounds like you're introducing a perverse
visual element dude. A few steps more to Cubase and
graphics and...aaaargh!

Ignore me though. It's something I've heard requested
before. You can, at least, put in notes in step time
using the arpeggiator. Or, do like my old Oberheim
Minisequencer does and gradually increase the length
of each pattern from 1 upwards, tuning each new note
as you go. Me, I just don't want to see what notes I'm
banging in, it makes me go too conventional - but
maybe Colin will put what you want into P4, who knows?

:)

Dude, I've known you long enough that I expected that!

Arpeggiator?

Yeup.. I hear that too, but I work in that I have a sequence in my head, I
bash it out on a keyboard, and then want to have the sequencer take over.
Working with the Mobius is similarly frustrating this way.

I know. I mean, I went into a music store the other day and this guy
sidled up and said "can I help you?". "I dunno," I replied, "are you a
psychiatrist?". You know how it is...

Whenever I want to enter notes in a specifc order from a keyboard,
without worrying about timing, I use the arpeggiator. Func+Record gets
you in there.

Point taken. Hurrying is overrated and frantic people are often scary.

A pic from 1 of my favorite shows, The IT Crowd:

It's a little hard to see, but his shirt has a picture of Mao holding up his
little red book and it says:
"RTFM"
;-D

funny thing tho, I'm always preaching the RTFM gospel, but I never tried the
arpeggiator thing either.
