help for a novice

2008-05-05 by sean_zoega

I've just started to try and learn the operation of the p3.
Unfortunately I have got stuck pretty early on. When I create a simple
pattern the gate lengths seem to be random i.e. they change from one
repeat of the pattern to the next. I've been through the manual but so
far...no luck. Can a P3 guru help out?
Thanks

Did you buy it second hand? If so, initialize the bank in question as the previous owner's data may be in the patterns.

  cheers,
  eric f

Could you tell me if you have used any aux events? Or if there are ties
active on some steps? Is this a standard 16 step pattern straight from
an initialised bank? And have you tried this with a number of different
synth patches?
Usually, anything that changes from one repeat of the pattern to the
next tends to do so because it uses aux events (that's one reason
they're so cool); check out the values of auxes A-D, what they are set
to, if the aux steps are active. If not, time for some head scratching
or for Colin to throw a synaptic spark or two.

G'luck :)

Or it's playing more than 1 bar in a row, and the bar you are editing only
loops around every so often?

I did buy it second hand and it is just back from Colin who kindly
fitted a new screen for me. I have initialised the whole machine
F1+STEP 7 when powering machine on. I did this after the initial
random gate length problems but it hasnt changed anything. As I havent
got as far as Aux events I get the feeling this unit might have to go
back to Colin again for repair. Thanks for the help though.

Thanks for the advice. I am just in the process of installing P3
tools. I did however record the sequence into Cubase. I then played it
back and everything is fine...which would of course point to the
problem being Cubase and not the P3. I havent the slightest idea what
Cubase could be doing to the MIDI data though...the head scratching
continues.
Thanks for the help

Here is what I would do. Load p3 tools onto a pc. Get all of the data onto p3 tools and look to see where, if any aux events are defined. If they're all blank, I would send it back.

Alternatively, you could feed the midi into a pc based sequencer to see by how much these lengths are varying, how often, etc.
