v4.5 ?

v4.5 ?

2009-05-30 by Colin Fraser

Folks,

I'm presently considering a change to v4 to bring it in line with the
forthcoming Cirklon OS.
In v4 each pattern 'belongs' to a certain track and part, so a total of 64
patterns are possible per bank.
To use a pattern in a different part or track location, there is the ghost
function.
Ghosting happens automatically when you use part copy.
But there is always this issue of the 'original' pattern location to be
considered when you edit a pattern.
You have to think whether you are saving a 'real' pattern, saving a modified
ghost pattern as a new real pattern or over-writing the original, or saving
to a different location as a ghost or a new pattern.
I've found this is unnecessarily complicated.

Cirklon has a pool of patterns for each bank.
Each track can be assigned any pattern from the pool.
When you enter edit mode on a track with no pattern assigned, a new pattern
is created in the pool and assigned to that track.
When you edit an existing pattern, there are only two choices - 'save' and
'save as'.
When you 'save as', you save the changes to the pattern as a new pattern,
and that new pattern is assigned to the track you were editing.
But the previous version of the pattern remains in the pool, and you can
re-select it for the track, or any other track, using pattern select.
There are no ghosts - a pattern can be used in as many tracks and parts as
required, but doesn't 'belong' to any particular place.

I'm part way through modifying the current v4 code to work this way too.
Will post a test version of it once it's working...

Best regards,
