New user asks stupid questions

2010-08-05 by sunilsolanki@rogers.com

So i just received a P3 (bought from NoiseTheorem off Ebay) and I am very excited to try and get it running.
Page 7 (the very 1st page!) of the manual takes me through a very simple starting exercise:

Works when I hit TUNE and I hear the not on and off. Then when I hit RUN and I hear a pattern running when I shouldn't. I clear the pattern (by pressing the numbered keys) and then when i press them again I hear nothing. (also when i enter the PLAY/EDIT mode it says editing pattern 4 rather than 1 every time)

HELP a newb!

Is there a way to initialize the unit?

Thanks

First of all, you shouldnt rely to heavily on the manual's I included. They
are for older versions of the firmware, and some significant things changed.
You should definitely get the info for 4.5 from the website. I think the
manuals included were for version 3.0 os.

Hold F1 and step key 7 while it is booting up.
It should prompt to wipe everything.
You need to hold F1 + F2 together to confirm.

If you have the latest OS installed, read :

Thanks very much for your prompt replies! Excellent group you have here. Nice to see the man himself (Colin) on here supporting his fine products.

Anyone know why this (below) is happening?

The unit works when I hit TUNE and I can hear the note on and off. Then when I hit RUN and I hear a pattern running when I shouldn't be. I assume this is just an old stored pattern.

So I clear the pattern (by pressing the numbered keys) and then when I press them again I hear nothing. (also when i enter the PLAY/EDIT mode it says editing pattern 4 rather than 1 every time)

So should I not just be able to edit this pattern and resave it?

Are there any FAQ's for these type of new user questions BTW ?

Thanks

Hi

I suggest you ascertain what version of OS you are using first.

My recommendation, though I'm sure others would disagree, is to go with the
latest v3 OS and have the manual to hand (which is based on v3).

Initialise the machine (p159) so you can start with a blank pallette.

Make sure the midi channels are as you want them (p36).

Then go with the getting started section from p8.

Re: New user asks stupid questions

2010-08-13 by sunilsolanki@rogers.com

Thanks for your patience P3 gurus...

I am running version 4.5 (thanks for installing the latest version Tony)(his music is friggin AMAZING by the way).

I read through the manuals for 3.100006 and then was thoroughly confused by the 4 and then 4.5 updates which seem to negate a lot of the features (like playlists) that i had just read about...

I initialized the unit and got rid of any of the old stored patterns and then began my journey into the P3 at last...

hooked it up to a trusty old synth and brought up a simple drum layout. bassdrum on C3, pressed PLAY/EDIT and then TRACK 1 and then hit run. See the little red lights blinking along at 130 bpm...nice.

press keys 1 5 9 13 and hear the four on the floor drumbeat(when i turn the knobs to C3)... now its time for the high hats that are on D3.

i SAVE ORIG and then hit PLAY/EDIT and then TRACK 2 and go to record hi hats the same way and NOTHING happens.

I am sure you are all laughing at the new guy by now...sorry.

I know i could have put the high hats into the 1st pattern, but i wanted to be able to drop them in and out. I can hear drums or i can hear high hats but not together.

help me on my journey to 4.5 enlightenment...

midi channel 1 in the P3 and on the synth (Which is an old yamaha SY22-vector synth !!!)

i usually use it as a controller for Reason, but i knew it had a drum map, so i thought i'd test the P3 with it.

Hi,

The initialised P3 puts the tracks 1 to 8 on MIDI channels 1 to 8.
You'll need to put track 2 on MIDI channel 1.
Hold PAGE and press key 5 - "MIDI Chan" will be above key F3
Hold F3, and press 2.
The display should now show 'Select channel (trk=2)'.
Press 1 to select MIDI channel 1 for track 2.
The you should hear your hi-hat.
