Arnauld- Thanks for the kind words on Electrolux. It was much work , but a lot of fun. My platform is Digital Performer. I chose this because at the time I was shopping around and asking people about this, everybody opened with "Well, if you can't afford Digital Performer, then..." Literally, I heard this about 6 times. So figuring there was a message in there somewhere, I chose DP. Then yes, I also cut and paste all over the place where required as this is one of the major benefits of digital audio, and what I consider the most significant advancement in electronic music production in the last 25 years. I use a motor mix control surface for mix automation. I found (attempting) to do so with a mouse quite limiting and the latency was driving me bats. I strongly recommend that everyone invest in a DAW controller, as it makes a world of difference. Mackie now makes one, as do a few others. As far as the process of writing, on larger works such as this thing, I precompose. I basically know what I'm going to have to do to complete it well in advance of actually recording all the voices. The work is mapped out, then I begin painting in the colors so to speak. This is not to say that changes don't come up during the process, or that I go back and re-realize some of the voices later if I think improvement is needed. But it's not like I find a new sound, then find a place to put it. Most of the voice selection is done well before the piece is laid to 'tape' so to speak. I am not saying that this is the only way, nor the best way to write - it's just my schtick - and for good or bad, it works for me. As far as where the ideas come form initially, usually an entire piece is sparked by a single phrase, which may or may not have it's roots in some improvational moment. - something I tripped on when dicking around. This was definately the case with this one. The first phrase, the two massive impulses that happen immediately and the sustain that follows was that moment for this work. From that point, i sat down and wrote a piece of music around it and as per my usual, i used traditional music form. E is ABA with a coda. I think you can definately hear the recapitulation of the A section, although varied somewhat from it's original presentation. ANd I don't know if anyone else does this, but I am always aware of aqn audience listening when I start this whole process. Jacob Druckman siad a composer needs to be responsible about the time they take from their ausience and I've taken that to heart. So to that end, my driving force when writing is the 'hook them in the first 20 second" theory. If you can develop an idea, a sound, a presentation - SOMETHING that grabs their attention in the first 20 seconds - then you've got them after that as long as you want them. If that doens't happen within that time however, your audience will probably lose their focus rather quickly and at that point, the piece might as well end.
