Analogue systems

I am a classical musician and haven't dabbled before in electronic music.

My question about the ondes is this:

How do they get the strings and the gong to resonate?  One website talks of a screw being connected to the gong, but it is a site that has used an electronic translation.  All the sites talk of a transducer, but that could be an artifact of the electronic translation.  Either way, there IS some sort of direct resonating effect... more than just strings vibrating because the speaker is loud.

Any ideas?
