Re: More French Connection

Hello Bryan Lowe

I listened to your piece - it was recommended to me yesterday by Bob
Williams himself - and I'm now convinced that FC is for me! Thank you
very, very much.

You may be interested to know that today, by a weird and very nice
coincidence, I stumbled upon an effect plug-in which goes some way to
recreating the Ondes' palm and gong resonators. It's called PianoVerb
and it's available for free from here:

www.pspaudioware.com

It's toward the bottom of the page. It's a VST reverb plug-in which
recreates the resonance produced by twelve tuned piano strings
(similar to the palm). The actual effect is more like the Ondes's
gong resonator, and I must say that, with a bit of tweaking, the
resulting metallic harmonics are quite close the original.

I've just quickly processed your piece through it and it sounds very
nice. There are some artifacts however: sometimes the piano strings
really do sound too much like piano strings, especially during loud
glissandi. But I'm encouraged in general. It certainly proves that
such digital recreations can be done. The next logical step would be
the creation of dedicated Ondes resonator plug-ins.

If you aren't computer music literate then all this might be useless
to you because you'd need a VST host programme like Cubase, plus a
computer with a good sound card to use it. The cost and learning
curve might be a problem in the short term.

Anyway, when I've figured out how to send mp3s to this board, I'll
try and post your piece with the new effect on it.

Cheers and good luck with you concert
Heath
