Korg MS-20 and Modular Synths

2005-06-18 by Malcolm Davis

Hi,

I have a small home studio in a loft, with the usual mix of hardware
keyboards, software based synths, all running through Abelton Live
4.1.2, and a strong desire to add additional vintage analogue gear
to the solitary Korg MS-20 in my possesion. However the cost of
analogue gear means that I could not afford what I'd really like
unless I win the lottery(a Korg SQ-10 and MS-50, a Minimoog, a
Prophet 5, an ARP 2600, and I can only dream about the Roland System
700 that RL Music is selling at the moment)or it will take me years
to save up for each individual synth. I have tried the software
emulations, and whilst the latest updates do sound more like the
originals, I still dislike using a mouse to manipulate virtual
controls on a screen.

Hence my interest in going down the hardware modular route as
a 'third way' so to speak. Analogue Systems RS Integrator seems to
be the best hardware modular option from what reading I have done.
But as a relative newcomer to this, my interest is whether or not I
could integrate say a RS Integrator System 1 or System 3, and a RS-
200 Sequencer with the MS-20 via its patch panel. To what extent
would this mean I have a small but powerful modular synth in a self-
contained unit (the MS-20 is sitting on an empty Quik Lok 14u Rack
Unit) that could then be expanded later as I see fit, and space
permitting? From what I could see this would cost me about £1750,
or
the equivalent of a Minimoog in good condition.

Would be interested in any advice.

thanks,

Malcolm
