Advice / The Third VCO

Advice / The Third VCO

2008-02-28 by elminkopeligroso

Hi Folks

I just signed up here as I'm very seriously thinking of getting myself
an AS system. It'll be my first modular synth. I'm reasonably well
versed with synths generally and a lot more since I've now spent hours
going through the modules at the AS site!

I've decided to go with the AS system becasue they're very well
reviewed in SOS, you lot seem very happy, I've a deep connection to
Cornwall as a region and I also love the EMS sound that AS have
brought to their systems. Bob Williams has been very helpful in
answering my questions too, which bodes well.

I've now gone gone through various system permuations in my head - I'm
packing the 168HP case - and this is where I now stand.

RS140 24HP MIDI
RS95 12HP OSC
RS95 12HP OSC
RS95E 12HP OSC
RS500e 12HP FILTER
RS100 12HP / FILTER
RS40 12HP SH/NOISE
RS85 12HP LFO
RS60 12 HP ADSR
RS510e 18hp TRAPEZOID
RS 170 6HP PATCHING
 RS20 6 HP RING MOD
RS 150 6 HP SEQUENTIAL SWITCH
RS180 12HP VCA

You can see my line of thought - I can cram a minimoog and a VCS3 into
one case?!! Holy ****! Of course I'm aware that I can't *really*
squeeze both those beasts into one box, but I'll have a damned good try.

My main concern is that I'm losing in flexibility what I'm gaining in
oomph - I particularly wonder whether I should be fitting a mixer -
probably RS160 - in there, probably instead of the third VCO.

I also wish I could get a joystick in there - though I think that will
have to come later with some kind of breakout box. With
this being my first modular, I think I should be keeping the MIDI
converter.

So my question to you is - and thanks in advance for any advice you
might have for me - am I sacrificing brains for brawn by including the
third VCO at the expense of a dedicated mixer? Bob W seemed to think
I'd be fine with my current config, but I thought I'd also put it to
the board.

Thanks!

Mark

well if it was me i would get the mixer, two VCOs is quite enough most of the time, at least for me, and you have two filters, so...

also I would seriously consider the RS110 over the 100, its bigger which could be a problem, but it is much more flexible and the LPF is just as good or better IMO, I like this filter a lot. Of course with the RS110 you would probably need the mixer... you could consider a smaller mixer from another manufacturer, but maybe this spoils your idea though!

take your time is my other advice, its a lot to think about in abstract - I have some modules taking up space on mine (like the Rs20 ring mod and some doepfer logic modules) which for various reasons I just about never use

is there a slew generator hidden away there somewhere? - maybe the trapezoid can do this job? - personally I couldn't think of a modular without one

of course we all have different goals with these instruments, that is part of the fun

If you can afford it I would get only RS95Es instead of the regular
RS95. I have five RS90/95 vco's and not having that fine tuning is a
pita when dealing with multiple oscillators. Also don't be afraid to
mix and match modules from other companies, that's the beauty with
the euro rack format, lots of stuff to choose from and lots of
interesting approaches from doepfer, livewire, plan b, etc.

Take care.

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions.
I think I will ditch the third VCO and replace it with a RS160 mixer.
Considering replacing the RS150 switcher with the RS350 slew generator
- both are 6HP.

I'm sure that, finances permitting, I'll end up expanding into other
modules and other manufacturers too.

The frantic rate of module juggling has slowed down for me now, so I
think I must be close to making the leap and can't wait to actually
get patching!

Hi, You got a good system going here.
Probably you would consider a cv mixer very soon, but still.

This will do you good;-)
