Connection question.

Connection question.

2003-07-23 by nectarios01

Hi there.

I am new to this forum since I just got some AS modules to go on my
Doepfer racks. I bought the modules used and I could not find any
construction/interconnection details on the A.S. site.
I wanna ask which is the right way to connect the AS modules on the
buss board? The RS110 has two red lines as well, one that is right
on the edge and one that is 3-4 wires inside. The red line on the RS
100 is not on the edge either. Any help please?
Can someone tell me the current requirements for the follwing
modules?

RS 20
RS 80
RS 100
RS 110
RS 165

I think I might have overloaded one of my racks and there is no
power going to the modules that are fitted on it (I think the +12V
PSU is gone...).

Thank you in advance.

Peace out.

Do you have any of the custom doepfer -> AS cabling? They're
ribbon cables cut up and crossed over to allow the right
voltages to go to the right pins...

If you have these, it's pretty easy, just make sure 0v (red line) is
towards the bottom on the doepfer bus side, and that it goes
into the AS module on the pins marked 0v. That'll get the other
pins lined up as well.

If you don't have these, STOP right now. You'll need to make
them.

I don't have time to pull apart my doepfer system at the moment,
but if you need some pics of the ones I've made, I can take a
few at some point in the next few days. If you're handy with a
multimeter and you're careful, you could probably suss it out
yourself though.

But that's the key, BE CAREFUL. Sending the wrong voltages
to your modules WILL fry sensitive ICs like 3080s, TL072s, and
especially the BC transistors, I know from unfortunate
experience!

First, you will need to get the Doepfer adapter cables, if you
haven't already.
Also, you have to orient the adapter cable correctly at both the
module end and the Doepfer board end. ZTo do this, you must take note
of thye markings on the AS PC board. On several modules, this means
that the Adapter cable is pointing towards the front panel as it
leaves the module and must be twisted backward to reach the bus board.
On all my AS modules, the ribbon cable's red line is on top of the
cable as it leaves the module.
When connecting the cable to the Doepfer bus board, the red line
should be oriented just like it would for a Doepfer module. In all of
my modules, this means that the cable must be twisted 180 degrees to
orient properly with the Doepfer bus board.
If you have no power to the modules in your rack, this probably
means the AS modules are hooked up wrong. Luckily, I had no damage
to my system or my AS modules, even after repeatedly hooking them up
wrong (doh!). Nonetheless, this is probably not recomended.

hi nectarios,
if you want to connect AS modules to the AS psu board
all you have to take care of is to connect the red
stripe of the ribbon cable to the "0 volts"on the
module pcb and on the PSU pcb.now,if you want to
connect AS modules to the doepfer bussboard then you
will need special converter cables.i think analogue
systems or analogue solutions can supply these cables.
as for the power requirements:
rs20:10mA
rs80:25mA
rs100:30mA
rs110:45mA
rs165:5mA

btw,are you from greece???nectarios is a greek
name!:-)

Thanks Bakkis and shm. Yes Bakkis,I am from Greece, born and raised
in Athens, but have been living in the UK for the last 4 years. I
have checked my cables and they seem to do that twist to get the red
line from top to bottom. My RS 110 module cable does not do that
though, I'll check it out right after work to see if the red wire
goes from 0V on the module to 0V on the buss board.

Thanks again people, much appreciated.

Peace out.

hi nectarie,
basically you'll need the converter cables!you must
check if you have them first!the AS cables and the
doepfer cables are NOT the same!!!!check this before
you destroy something!

Thanks guys, got it sorted!...well almost as I damaged the RS 110
cable (broke one of the pins as I removed it...ordering another
today). The RS 100 is a great filter and sounds harsher and more up-
front than the equivalent Doepfer A-120 Moog VCF. It overdrives more
than the A-120 as well, but not more than the A-125 WASP filter
which is the best for distortion...but the RS 100 sounds
less "organic" than the A-120. The RS100 sounds even more different
than the A-120 VCF when the resonance is cranked up. I'd say that I
prefer the RS 100 when the resonance is high. Can't wait to get the
RS 110 working!
The A.S. mixer and ring modulators are a bit less "hotter" than the
Doepfer ones. The ring mods sound a bit different as well...I do not
have a favourite one since they both sound great, but the sounds
from the A.S. ring mod were a bit more interesting with slow PWM on
square waves. I finally have a voltage controled LFO since the
Doepfer ones I have did not have the frequency CV input, nor the
ramp up/ramp down pot...weeeeee!

Thanks again.

Nectarios.
