Bigger better porkier power supplies

Bigger better porkier power supplies

2004-12-26 by Keith Pomfret

My two pence worth on the bigger better power supplies thing. I've not
yet butchered any Analogue Systems kit but a set of home made racks
running an assortment of Doepfer and ASol bits was close to the limit
of the Doepfer supply on board one of the racks. I cast around eBay and
picked up a couple of 'scrap' power supplies. One is a 3U rack
(complete with fan) - vastly over engineered and with 4 modular
supplies on board. +/-12 at an amp, +/-12 at an amp again, 5v at 6 amps
and 24v at more than enough. This lump - which fits nicely into the
bottom of my rack - cost me 15 quid. Another tenner got it tested,
pronounced bulletproof and certificated. At the same time I picked up a
server with 30 2Gb SCA/SCSI hard drives in it. I've taken it to bits
and flogged ten of the hard drives. (which paid for it four times
over). The rest live in the 'it'll come in useful' pile and the power
supply (the requisite +12-12+5 industrial strength computer sort)
promises to be on hand in case I ever need another one.
THe 3U supply is running a couple of Doepfer racks and I've still yards
of headroom to build and populate more racks

Cheers for now
