I'd love to hear more samples of the RS290 in action, if you get a
chance!

Yes. And I'd like to hear samples of the rs400, rs500e and rs510e.
Volunteers can upload their mp3 on the group site.

What kind of music ?

2003-03-24 by Arnauld Michelizza

There is not a lot of activity on that mailing list. So, I have a little
question to ask to every one. What kind of music do you do with your
modular ? And do you use other gear ?

I have a basic RS integrator and some filters (3bpf, comb filter, reverb).
I have also an rs7000, from yamaha, that I use as a hardware sequencer and
like a drumbox. I also have a multi-effects (tc m300). These are good
gear and the only annoyance with the rs7000 is that the os inside it is
not free software, so we can't improve it.
I do not make a lot of tracks because I'm still searching my own sound and
my production are still... passable. Obviously, I like a lot electronic
music : minimalist techno, ambient, Terry Riley, Aphex Twin, etc.
I'm discovering effects and I'd like to buy a phaser. But I do not know
what to buy... Any advices ?
Unfortunaly, my job takes me a lot of time and I have too few moment to
make music and to search for sounds with my RS. But one of my projects is
to do a bunch of samples for the yahoo group site.
Have a good day !

click on 'Som of Frankensynth" for equipment

click on 'Music Samples' for those.

hello arnauld,

i also like this "on the edge" electronica like aphex twin,
autechre, plaid and so on. as a "part-time-dj" i have lots
of favourite bands, too many to mention here.

i make music with two other guys, together we have
masses of equipment and the studio is still growing.
we like to mix technologies, using all kinds of synthesis forms.
our style can be described as a mixture of electronica
and ambient.

hello arnauld,

yes, we have a website and there are unreleased mp3's too.
you can find a still unfinished list of our equipment
(max 50% of our gear is listed at the moment)
and a complete listing of our releases (no mp3's of these).

I have just heard the unreleased tracks on your site and I like them very
much ! You also have an amazing list of gear !!!
Do you only use hard sequencers ?

I've got a System 1 paired with some Doepfer sequencer modules. At the
moment I'm doing IDM (autechre, old aphex, etc) and electro, though my
interests are pretty far and wide, including synthpop and industrial/ebm.

Have you seen the new ASys phaser module? It's based on the small stone
stompbox, so it should sound quite nice!

the phaser i like most is the
moogerfooger 12-stage phaser.

unfortunately i don't have the ASys rs400,
but if it sounds similar to the smallstone,
than it is a good option.
the doepfer a-125 (6-stage) doesn't sound as good as
the moogerfooger, but it is the cheapest
in price, so you can buy two or more of them
for stereo processing and enhance it's sound even more.

if money is not the problem, i would go for
the moogerfooger.

Re: [analogue_systems] phaser vs. comb filter

2003-03-26 by Peter Grenader

The Moogerfoog ain't got nothin' on the Buchla's new 297 phasor - which I
have one of right here as I type this. Don's asking $1200 for that bad boy.
The unit isn't mine, it belongs to a friend. It sounds great, as you would
only hope with a module costing this much.

The A Sys Comb filter is interesting, but not what I would consider a
boilerplate comb filter. Although it will give you endless enjoyment with
its timbral possibilities. Think of it as Adrian Belew behind a faceplate -
this is sort of what it sounds like (I know, stupid analogy).

The Doepfer phasor is noisey as hell, but I'm perfectly happy with it
otherwise.

I have not heard the A Sys phasor but did see it at Namm. From what I saw,
it should be suhhhhh-weeeEEEeet. Built in sweep LFO was one thing of note I
noted (great English, huh?).

Anyway, Roger at Big City has one of the phasors and he will be installing
it into the large A Sys very very soon - so hopefully I will be able to give
you a full report at that time.

cheers,

Thank you very much for your answer !
I have seen price of the moogerfooger and it's a little bit pricey for
me... I thing that the rs400 is a good solution.
However, I read some articles on the Net and there is something not very
clear for me : is a phaser the same as a comb filter ? My opinion is that
a phaser is a comb filter with the delay controled by a lfo. Am I right ?

a phaser and a comb filter are different things.

a phaser shifts the phase of a signal, then mixing this
shifted signal with the inverted original signal.
this causes notches in the frequency spectrum.
the more stages in a phaser, the more notches you get.
all these notches have the same amplitude and are
"tempered". example of a 6-stage phaser: first notch 200 hz,
second notch 1000 hz, third notch 5000 hz.

a comb filter is delaying a signal by several milliseconds
(much longer than a phaser) and mixes it with the original.
this also causes notches, but these are different than those
generated by a phaser. you get more notches, they have different
amplitudes and they are not "tempered".
this means, that a comb filter is more a flanger than a phaser.

I've had the A-Sys phaser for about a month now - Very clean and

I hear that it is a clone of the Small Stone phaser but with CV's of
