I haven't seen part but it sounds like a plastic shaft that might be reparable with a drop of iso-cyanate glue ("super glue" here is Oz)

Thanks for the suggestion, I was thinking
of it myself, maybe using the gel form of Crazy Glue. I will try that
first and see if I can do it without making a mess....
