They are either optical ( a light shining through holes in a disk) or more likely mechanical (a copper contact slides around copper tracks on a disk) .
In either case it is likely they are dirty and just need cleaning.
The worst case would be a broken disk but that only occurs with severe abuse. Or a worn disk , but that is very unlikely as well.

Most likely a cup of coffee found its way down the shafts and a clean is all that is needed.
