If you can send it back, then I think that would be the best thing to do. If it's not just a loose cable then there's not much you can do without a decent soldering iron and some chip-quik in case it's SMD. I don't think it could be a loose cable as,like you say, there seems to be a pattern.Buttons 2,3,5 on both rows are on the same pins on a ribbon cable.It is possible that the ribbon cable could have been pinched during assembly/reassembly.
Do any of the screws look like they have been opened?

Yes, the top row of LEDs does seem to be ok - it's the bottom 3 rows that seem to be affected the most when I turn knobs, but it's only the LEDs on the same row which are affected by the turning.
