One way to find out exactly what's inside a syx file containing BCF/BCR2000 presets is to convert the syx file to a txt file.
In BC Manager you can do this from the main window: File -> Convert => Syx to txt/bc2.
Then you can study the txt file in any text editor (Notepad etc.).

Another safe method is to create a new BCR "context" in BC Manager's "B-Controls" window (via B-Control -> New BCR2000), then import the syx file in that context: then you can't do any harm to either your BCR itself (it isn't linked to that particular "context") or any file (as long as you don't explicitly save the context to an existing file, of course).
