Hi Mark, thanks for your reply.
I reconnected the BCR to my MIDI interface and put it into S3 mode. BC Manager can't detect it. The MIDI interfaces I've tried are the same make & model; they're the type where there's a USB connector on one end and a pair of MIDI DIN connectors on the other. The connector that says "Out" goes to the BCR's In and likewise the connector's In goes to the BCR's Out. This is the way I had it working for the last few years.
Despite the lack of BCR detection (I disabled all my other USB / MIDI devices) I tried to open the Behringer default sysex file in BC Manager, and was greeted by this message:
Error: MIDI system exclusive error
Wrong command
Send Memory ($34)
This may be the result of a feedback loop
Message 1
When I'm running REAPER, the MIDI interface shows MIDI activity when I do anything transport or song position related (mouse clicks, pressing space, that kind of thing) and the BCR's MIDI In and MIDI A LEDs light up momentarily too. No MIDI data seems to be making it out of the BCR; the BCR LEDs (both A and B) *do* light when I move any controls, but the MIDI indicator on the interface *doesn't* show any sign of life.
I might mention that this BCR has been with me for over 10 years and has travelled from the UK to the US, so I guess it might just be old...
Thanks again!
Dave

This does sound as if the USB controller on your BCR is defective, although you should make absolutely sure that it's not a software problem.
This issue has come up before in this group - search the message archive.
You might also want to look at the BC Manager Manual, section 24, question 42.
Maybe a stupid question: are you sure your USB cable is OK?
Hope this helps,
Mark.
