Most would say you should take them apart carefully, which is possible. This to avoid buildup of dust and lube.
But if I don't want to replace the pots, I spray a very small amount of CAIG DeoxIT where the shaft meets the metal sleeve around the plastic shaft. There is enough space where the spray will leak into the pot, cleaning and lubing it as you turn the shaft to work in the spray.
It works for me every time, but eventually you need to go inside the part or replace the pot.
